The popular websites like Myspace, Ryze and YouTube, before they opened to the public I am curious as to what promotional techniques they used to get so popular. I am sure they didn't sweat about seo techniques and keywords for PPC campaigns but their websites is very popular. Normally I know they would issue a press release and some news paper and magazines would pick up the story, but thats a farcry from a press release to over 1 million users. So my question to the WebMaster Gurus here whats the secret ?
Being in the right place at the right time with the right site. I don't think there's any big secret to it, these guys just came up with an idea, built a site, peiople found it, liked it, told their friends and the word spread like wildfire.
I think it was mainly word of mouth with those websites since it's community driven. If you think about it, word of mouth is by far your best bet to market a website if you don't have brand. If you get a website from a friend and they tell you to check it out, because they claimed to be a cool site then most likely people will give it a try.
For a good site like myspace, youtube, the first thing make them popular is their content. Visitors will tell others about these sites and one by one it will be known by everybody. Second, due to their good content or idea, they can get VC, and thus spread out Ad everywhere and everytime. Under these cases, SEO is not so important.

I just launched a site (ManageThings). As part of my efforts I started posting at a number of related forums and blogs, but that's pretty much it so far.
I understand that word of mouth is the key to success, but how do you get that point, that is the main question. Is it useful to start advertising the site on Google? Is it useful to start advertising on some of the forums that I started posting on?
Any form of advice would be awesome.

well, keep in mind from the start they had a team of several people promoting them not just 1 person. they also used alot of viral-markting techniques "invite your friends to myspace", "pass this video on" etc.
