I think you're right on - it's definitely an assault on Paypal and will not last forever -
The way I have Google Checkout set up - the customer does have to register with G before making the purchase, but it is a very simple process. They basically enter their credit card info right away.
So far using it has worked well for me. The brand recognition of Google helps with peoples concern about security etc. also I think.
