I joined stumbleupon a few days ago and received a couple thousand new visitors a day. But it only lasted two days.

There is only one way to get good traffic from stumbleupon and the best and non cheatable way to to add some good stickly content to your site that people like and think it's worth a stumble. Don't go asking others to stumble your site as it's only cheating the system.

Regardless of whether or not it's cheating if you submit content to StumbleUpon or any other social media site that the community isn't interested in or thinks is poor quality it's just going to get thumbed down or buried.

Take John's advice. Build some sticky content on your site. If the content is good then people will see it and stumble it and digg it and add it to their bookmarks at del.icio.us. They'll even link to it directly.

Stumble traffic is always short little peaks, although they can be up to almost a week. They seem to enjoy photos in particular, so they've sent me some traffic now and then.

The best way to get traffic from Stumble Upon is to use their service for a little while, figure out what that crowd likes, and cater to them. Make a few pages they'll like, and link these to each other. And, like VanGogh points out, the thumbs down will keep sites that really don't belong there from showing up.

Another thing to keep in mind is, when installing Stumble, you can let it inject user reviews into Google's SERPs. If you come up with a few pages that Stumblers will love, and get positive reviews, you can also get added traffic from this feature of theirs.
