Let say I would like to run social networking with specific niche group. Let also say that group are people in marketing professional. Just for example.
How much time do you think we need to get first 1000 and first 5000 registered users? Again, it is specific niche market within social networking.
In promotion team are going to be 2 persons and they will promote network in follows way:
-blogging
-press release
-forums
-replies to articles with our signature
-link exchange
Do you think is possible with only that methods reach from 100 to 1000 in 1 month and from 1000 to 5000 in extra 3 months?

Nobody will be able to predict how long it will take any site to get a certain number of members. Could be anything between one second and never. Any figures will be wild guesses based on absolutely nothing.

yes it's possible. But if you were to ask the same question and replace those numbers with any random numbers, That would also be possible.
I guess it all depends on what you bring "unique or special" that sites like myspace don't. What is your USP?
Anything is possible. There is only one way to find out.

st0x is right. Without knowing the site or how it is unique or might appeal to its target market, it's impossible to guess.
What if your social networking site isn't appealing? What if you have coding issues? What if the two people you hired can't promote worth a ****? What if they promote too much and they overshoot your goals? What if there's no interest among marketing professionals? What if there's too much interest?
There are simply too many questions and variables to consider without seeing the site.
Or what if 5 minutes after your site goes live someone with a better site in the same niche also goes live. Everything Matt said above is exactly right. It's possible and would be possible with just about any number you gave.
There's simply no way any of us can predict if it'll happen.

I think aiming for about 500 users/month initially is a reasonable goal for a free social networking site. As the user base grows, the hope is that an exponential effect will take place as your users invite their friends.
I launched my site a week ago and only collected about 30 users so far, so you guys are doing well!
Depends on your content and promotional methods. You might want to do some sort of incentive program to drive up visitors. But be advised that they won't necessarily hang around...
I'm expecting also around 3K-5K members by august to my http://www.toppicturedating.com site. However i wasn't able to implement my original strategy to publish free ads to gumtree, so now considering other methods.
I won't be able to archive this doing SEO only or from forum posts.
