Could too many sitewide outbound links effect your pagerank and search engine listing?. If so, how many is to many?.

the number probably won't matter, but the quality certainly will.

One link to a bad site is bad, 100 to quality sites is good.
Think about what your users like, Not what Google likes.

Look at slashdot and digg. Every page on these sites links out, They have linked to tens of thousands of sites, they function to link out, It has done them no harm.

Yes thats a good point, so being a directory and its function is to link out, sitewides shouldnt matter too much as long as i keep a tight hold on the quality side of things.
