And make sure it's not in a niche that's done to death. When you have your niche then make yourself as useful as possible to your audience. In my niche there are a lot of newcomers to blogging and some people that aren't very tech savvy. You'd be amazed what "old news" is new to someone else.
I know a lot of SEO people are saying to say no to link building but I have to disagree with it because I think returning a link someone gave you is good karma and you never know who you'll befriend in the process.
I had someone find my blogging tips posts useful and link to me, which lead me to link back and then it progressed to e-mail conversations and a blogging friend was made. This blogging friend has some connections and ended up getting a write up in the paper and mentioned me to the author who then mentioned my blog in the paper. Then a popular local website saw the article and blogged about it and included links to us.
Would that have happened on it's own? Maybe, but probably not.
Today I turned down an offer to be on a reality show after they spotted my blog in the paper all of this from just blogging about something I like.
