Are these types of links really worth much?

In reading this forum, I've noticed that people spend quite a bit of time looking for ways to get inlinks to their site from blogs, forums, article distribution, stumbleupon, and similar sources.

But are these types of inlinks generally really worth much, either in terms of direct traffic or search ranking improvement? Don't Google and Yahoo give them very little weight in their algos? Sure, occasionally someone might get a direct traffic boost, at least temporarily, but isn't that a RARE EXCEPTION.

In other words, wouldn't it be a better use of time to try to get a few Quality links, or just work on improving the site?

Thank you

I think you are right, good links are worth their weight in gold so to speak.

There are some people who go for the numbers game using the logic that the more links you have the more your traffic. In theory this works but you end up getting a lot of general and casual traffic, of whom probably only a small percentage will be interested in your content.

"Quality" links however are more likely to bring you a visitor who will stay on your site more than 5 seconds!

It depends a great deal on what type of site you run. An adult site might get people to stick around for more than five seconds even with the lowest quality links. On the other hand, no one can read by blog, and then tell me with a straight face it would be popular on stumbleupon. Digg might like it, but with only text content thus far, there's no way stumblers ( and other, similar types of traffic ) would even read all of one post.

Alot of people look for high PR links to point to their site. How I see it is to not worry about getting high PR links, but look more into advertising your site on other websites that can gain your alot of extra traffic for your advertising buck.

If you do this then you will get some good traffic and people will most probably link back to your site anyway, if you have some good content on it.

As SEO we are much aware and we do ways on how can we improve the site , how to get rank and how to get traffic. Getting of quality and trusted link is just one factor on how can we improve the site . We continously researching and find techniques that help better improve the site, not just the design, content, seo and how can we better give service to the user.
