Think about doing some SEO for your site. (Search Engine Optimization).

As well, just spread the word. Word of mouth seems to be best.

If you can afford it, find a target audience of people who would benefit from your site, and then possibly buy some banner advertising from some "affiliate" sites.

Thats a good start.

You can advertise your site online through
website promotion (search engine optimization), link building,
online promotion (banner advertisement), article writing, press release, and affiliate program. Article writing can boost traffic for the site

It depends what your trying to promote. Putting your url on business cards works great for local business.

Getting "better" traffic implies that you can tell the difference
between several sources, and to do that you'd need a decent
conversion tracking system set up to count how many visitors
you get, and how many of them convert to customers.

Once you've got that sort of tracker in place, you can go out
and get as much traffic as possible from tons of different sources
and then focus your efforts on the best performing.

Do some SEO for your site
Get sites linking to yours that is on the same topic as your site
Link exchange with other sites
Add your site to web directories
Write articles and put your sites link in the resource box
Write a press release
Give out freebies with your sites link attached
Make your sites content sticky and people will automatically link to it
Do white hat SEO and not black hat
Add your sites link to your email and forums sigs
etc...

SEO is always the easiest and hardest way for website advertising. Seems incompatible, but it's true. SEO is the easiest thing you can do for your website. At the meantime, it is also the too huge a theme for ones to make an exact annotation.

Well it is probably considered the hardest since it's free on your part. Paying someone is always easier but it's not necessarily the best way.

SEO stands for search engine optimization. It's the easy way, because you only need to add or modify something on your scripts or artikles, you can do SEO all by yourself. It's the hardest way as well, because if you want to optimize your website for search engines maximally, you need to learn a lot regarding the SEO techs. That is also why there are many SEO companies charging a lot for dedicate SEO projects.

A big part of advertising your site depends on what your site is about. I personally have found great success in putting a link to my site on the events category of craigslist in several different counties. This works for my site because it qualifies to be in the events category and people always seem to be busy on craigslist. I have found success with adwords, but it can get costly. With all this said, good steady traffic is hard to achieve and requires patience and trying many different tactics. Dont be discouraged.
