i run http://www.GetTipsy.com - a site that basicly has mixed drinks, shots, punches, etc on it... im adding more drinks daily (the site is barely 2 week old) and users can add drinks by joining (free) and adding them.

ive bought some ad space on college type sites and done some link exchanges but was also thinking of promoting the site the old fashion way

i was going to get business cards made w/ the logo "get tipsy" in the font real big, under it "free drink recipes & mixes" and the URL across the bottom... i found a place online that will do $500 for $34 shipped - which comes out to $0.052 per card... i was then going to go to bars on off nights or early on before it gets busy, give them to the bartenders (because they are always looking for new drinks) and leave them on tables and bar rails as the nights go on and get packed... im in my early/mid 20's - so its not like i would look out of place putting these cards out there... and i know where all the college bars are and how college kids like to look for drinking games and new drinks.

my thoughts for doing this are: for the cost of doing this - its the same price of using google adwords at the minimum price per click (5 cents) - which means i would barely get any of the top search terms.

i also looked into getting paperboard coasters made but they are simply too pricey

so whats your thoughts on this?

I think this is a really good idea, except one thing, it's too localized, and your site doesn't seem to be a local site, it could even be international if it's good enough. I live in a college town too there are 50,000 students at the school but but even if you were able to hit every bar and every person who picked up your card went to your site you would still only get 35,000 people there. Which would be good but you could get more if you broadened your scope.

One other thing when I was hanging out in bars if I woke up the next morning and found a business card in my pocket, if it did not have a girls number on it, I would just throw it away.

You can also try vista print, they are pretty cheap and do a good job. I did 500 of there free cards + shipping of $12, last year, and have had good success giving them out to clients, friends, family, people I network with.

I think it has helped out my deal site and helped to build a local user base.

i HATE vista print... there cards are just shy of 3.5x2 standard, quality sucked and turnaround wasnt that good

Yeah sounds like a good idea Mike. People are often too easy to forget the power of traditional advertising, which is very important when trying to build up a corporate image.
Have you thought about beer-mats -you could hand them out around pubs - and they offer a very useful viral marketing tool (lots of people collect them).

The major concern would be the memory span of your acerage pub-goer, but an idea like this could easily be combined with a text-message (SMS) scheme, where users register for more info there and then (and sign up to receive updates).

Tzunami - yea i had thought about them... too exspensive...what i really wanted to do was the paperboard coaster, but even in quantities of 1000 the cheapest i could get them in single color was nealry $0.36/each which was just too high for me for someone to put a drink ontop of

as far as helping out - im mainly looking to get the nane out there, so people start to bookmark and check the site often, and users start adding their own drins to help build the database up... and trying to sell 468x60 banner space and static text space for the site

if your site grows enough you could start an online drink store, or become an affiliate of an online store. That is a nice way to make money.

WAY ahead of that... already have affiliates thru cj.com w/ every online wine and beer (and beer meister) company, as well as stuff like chaser pills and hangover stopper (pills to prevent hangovers after a long night of drinking)

thanks but im not looking for ptc programs... they are pointless... im only buying ad space on targetted sites - such as college aged kids and party sites and stuff like that
