Ron it really depends on what industry you're in. The article directories aren't really as effective as they were a few years ago.
I'm assuming the site you want links for is the one in your signature. So we're looking at real estate. The best places to have articles published would be on sites that are seen as an authority by others in your industry.
I did a quick search and see the Wall Street Journal has a site RealEstateJournal.com
I don't know the real estate market, but I would think since it's associated with the Wall Street Journal the site is a trusted authority. I see they publish articles. I don't know if they accept submissions, but pretend for a moment they do. It would probably require a very good article that might take weeks to research and write to have them publish it. Still that one article with a link back to your site will be worth more than if you submit dozens of articles to any of the directories.
Research the industry and find the authority sites that accept article submissions. Look at the other articles they've accepted so you know what they expect and then craft a really good article and submit it.
Yes it's much harder than submitting a quick article to a directory, but it's worth a lot more.
