For what kind of site?

If it's photos, post some of yours on sites like PhotoSig, photo.net, and others. If it's something else, there are a million things you could try, but we really can't suggest any good ones w/o knowing your URL to check out your site.

what if it's for a site dealing with tile and paint, remodeling, and home improvements, for a contractor's site?

we've been doing a lot of print advertising with our site on it, such as business cards, mailers, yellow book ads, trade directories, and door hangers

there's free marketing out there???

The local Craigslist would be good for you; they don't like spam, but are set up for local businesses to connect with potential clients, and vice versa.

Having a forum on your site might help, too. People can discuss how wonderful your service was, but also maintenance to need you less often. When these people need your help, they'll trust you all the more for it.
