Articles - Press Releases - How Much Do They Work?

I mean really, how much do they work. I have never submitted one for any of my sites and I rank very high for competitive terms that are searched 75K + times a month. And I never submitted one!

I have done some link exchanges and bought a few links but not all that many. Why is their so much hype about press releases and articles?

I've been trying to examine this a bit and the only thing I can come up with is if you host the articles, then you get free content. So, if you run an "article site" its in your interest to hype writing articles.
OTOH, if you write the article, and let someone else host it, they are probably getting a greater gain for you efforts than you are.

Due to the nature of the links in your sig, in your case, I'd bet hosting the articles yourself will get you more search traffic than submitting them elsewhere.
I know that when I'm working on my car, I pretty much google everything. I read the articles I find, I don't really follow many links from them.

Seems to me if you're publishing your own articles and press releases you're generating more of your own original content. OTOH, submitting a press release using something like PRWIRE.com would be a great source for an incoming link.

Something I've been wondering about ... in most cases, won't Site B be hosting massively duplicate content? How much benefit ( aka demand ) is there really for this?

I write and host my own articles, and for the past couple months, the one on Photoshop black and white conversions has drawn more traffic than any other page on my site. I've written a few articles for other sites, but always with the particular site in mind, and only publish that one copy.

I think this depends a great deal on the subject matter. Photography seems to be a subject that attracts a lot of clicks. But in any case, they raise your profile. More people will see your name in a positive light, and the hope is three months later when you come up on the first page of a search, the user remembers you from the article and clicks through. Unfortunately, Google Analytics can't tell me why someone clicked a link.

Don't worry about duplicate content. As long as you don't use that same article in your own site, you're fine. Search engines will see the source as the incoming link and put the rest away.

Press releases work very well for me...even if I have to spend a little for the "perks". Some great PR sites that I have used are PRweb.com and PRleap.com.

hmmm, I guess the difference is I build a site for users instead of search engines.

And if you're creating articles for other people to host, getting a link back from it to feed the GoogleBot, I like to give the other site something in exchange. I've written a couple of articles for PhotoSig; they're the only web site that has those articles, so they aren't getting dinged for duplicate content, and we both benefit. It's more work this way, but they get quality articles that are unique, I get my name out there, and people who share my hobby get good free advice.

I feel like if I want a link from the site that's going to host the article, I need to give them some type of incentive. That's pretty much how the entire world works...
