Poor form indeed...
Some might suggest misleading as more appropriate. Pardon my ignorance, but I'm really at a loss when it comes to understanding what people hope to accomplish with this type of "marketing".
While I haven't read any specific studies, I think it's pretty safe to infer that most folks probably spend mere milliseconds on a site once they realize that the title has nothing to do with the content. (Approximately the length of time it takes to race the cursor to the back button).
It kind of reminds me of the old bait and switch ploy where Company A puts out a flyer advertising a plasma TV for a hundred bucks. What they don't mention is that they only have two per store, (both of which are gone within the first five minutes), so you end up with aggressive sales people trying to talk everybody into the five thousand dollar model for the rest of the day.
Sure it creates a ready made market of people who are prepared to buy, but at what cost? Does anybody sit down and consider the price in ill will that lasts for years to come?
