I am new to photo imaging and considering purchasing either Paint Shop Pro 8 or 9. Can anyone tell me what the major difference are between the two?

Cevilla,

I have not had the opportunity to use PSP9 yet, but you may be interested in this thread which others were able to provide some feedback on PSP9:

I have just d/l psp 9 as i lost my version 7 when i moved to england.
I dont like 9 and i didnt like 8....so if anyone can tell me where to re- d/l 7 i would be a happy camper.)
also the text on 9 is a job to work. it gives you a text box...but no way to change fonts or even see the font you are using.
i do like however all the masks they have supplied you with on the program. some of the changes are not good. as i have used 7 for at least 4 yrs you can see i would be hard pressed to learn a new one lol...it took me long enough on version 7.

I've found version 7 to be better than 8 and 9. Some unneccicairy changes were made after 7 and some things made a lot more complicated to do. They also removed/modified some tools after PSP7 so a lot of it is learning to use a new programme.

It's 9 for me. Same interface as 8 but with loads of improvements. Well worth £100.

Wont be long before it can do all that Photoshop can do.

Im sorry, but I didn't think that 9 had come out yet???

I know that Photoshop CS is like PSP8.

Anyway, I have had a quick go on PSP 8 and it works well. You aren't probably going to be doind anything really major, so even PSP 6 would do. Although I don't think that you can buy it now but.

Paint Shop Pro 9 rocks. It has tools that 7 doesn't have and even a few new ones from 8, and the new interface is great. It looks alot like 8, but it has the ability for everything to scroll out of your workspace like 7 did only better. I never liked 8 because everything was in my way. But it has imporved vector tools, and the text part os better, imho. A box comes up that you type in, and then your tool palette is where you choose your font and stroke and anti-aliasing. It gices you three choices on that, none, sharp, and smooth.

There are still some things that you can do in Photshop that you can't in PSP (i.e.- adding effects to vector paths such as beveling and drop shadow without losing the vector) but It is getting there. Corel owns it now, and I love it.

Also, the new art media tools, combine the flexability of psp and programs like Corel Painter.

PSP 9 is the best.
