I found this resource (after reading a book) - it's a Javascript fix that for lots of issues with IE5.5 and IE6 and makes them act like IE7.

Unzipped, the folder is about 156KB - is this a reasonable size or is it too much for Javascript files on a smallish site?

156K for a javascript is pretty unacceptable. There are much easier workarounds.

Yeh I thought it was a bit too large a file - if you had a large web site with hundreds of pages, it might be worth it, but otherwise I think there are probably other better workarounds and hacks that can be used.

Daniel,

I agree. The best thing to do is to do your own workarounds.

Also, why would you want to support IE5 anymore? I can't wait for IE6 to bite the dust.

I can't wait for IE6 to be buried for good either but it sadly has to be supported. I don't consciously support IE5.5 anymore anyway - if it works with my site, great, if not then I don't really care. The Javascript files come with support for IE5.5 by default and I'm not a Javascript guru so I wouldn't know what parts to remove if I wanted to drop support for IE5.5 with these files.
