Is there a way that I can have new content appear on the page as it is added using javascript, rather than having to refresh?

I mainly want this for my active users counter, and my shoutbox. Everything else is coded in HTML,CSS, and ASP.

and it's not limited to PHP I'm in the process of coding a admin interface in ASP + AJAX methods
