I posted this in the php forum and i was told i could only do this using javascript.
the problem is i have a two form fields one is the drop down category field and one is the drop down subcategory field.
if one value is selected from category it changes the list of values in the subcategory field.e.g
if php id chosen from the category field, subcategory displays all the values for php subcategories.

does anyone know where i can find a tutorial or if anyone knows how to do it themselves.

So presumably you want linked select boxes that display a range of pre-downloaded options I.E. don't use AJAX to retrieve data as selections are made.
If so you can try SelectCascade, which tries to simplify the task.
