I have just started to learn AJAX, I do have knowledge of PHP. What I have now is a login script in PHP which I call through AJAX, but the problem is, I don't really know how to interact and display messages etc. for example if the PHP script has successfully logged in, I'll echo "Logged in", but should I use AJAX to catch the phrase "Logged in" and display a proper message? Or should I echo all the HTML in PHP instead and use document.xmlhttp.responseText to show it in AJAX?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well, just displaying "logged in" isn't very friendly. When they have logged in, why not show them something they're interested in? For example, lastest news, a control center, recent data, or targeted content. You have a chance to influence your users' behavior, so take advantage of it.
