Hi all, I'm working on a bit more JS at work now, and I'm looking for a good book to help me freshen up my JavaScript skills, preferably intermediate to advanced level. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Good JavaScript books are hard to come by, IMHO. Even online, it's hard to find good resources. If you're willing to watch some video, Douglas Crockford from Yahoo has some great (about 9, I think) tutorials. Yahoo also has a JavaScript developer center.

I have found this Javascript Book, by PPK, to be extremely useful. His website, also, is filled with useful free information.

Thanks guys, I will take a look at those. I forgot about PPK's book-- I love his site, and I have seen the book advertised on the site before, but it never occurred to me to look into it.

Is this book any good?

5th Edition "javascript: The Definitive Guide" from O'Reilly pretty much lives up to its name in my opinion.

Though I haven't read the O'Reilly book, it has a very good reputation.

Im currently reading Sam's Teach Yourself JavaScript in 24 Hours. Seems pretty good!

You can try "Document Object Model" by Friends of Ed,This book is written for css and xhtml designer,If you design Web sites then check out this book

Hey, since this thread is still alive, here is another book that I found recently, that I am thinking about purchasing: Pro JavaScript Techniques, by John Resig, the creator of jQuery.

Javascript: The Definitive Guide is a great one.

I'm one of those people that learns best by doing it first-hand.

I can read for hours, but unless i'm actually working at it; I wont necessarily retain that knowledge.

If I put what I am trying to learn "into effect", associative memory will assist me in the effort to remember what it was I just did, and how it was done.

I have pdf version of Wordware Advanced JavaScript 3rd Edition Nov 2007.
But I dont think I can upload here.

@Lashtal: You are definitely right about that one. Most coders, in fact, learn by doing. However, I find it is good to have a book to "jump start" my thinking and comprehension of a subject. Once I get started, most of my references become online. It is still nice to have something in print to refer to, however.

Anyone experience with SitePoint books like: simply javascript?

I've read most of this book, but it's only a reference book. Books that allow you to follow examples in my opion are the best to learn.

If you buy one, check the publish date. Make sure you get the newest book, as Javascript has changed a lot over the years. Peachpit has recently brought a new one out 2 months ago called Javascript and Ajax. That's quite a good one.

I was also considering Pro JS Techniques and DOM Scripting. But oh well, these all are about same subjects with same contents. I guess I didn't make a bad choice.

O'Reily stands out.. Try it..
