Talkupation: checkmate is on a distinguished road
Is thier a script where in one text file it stores upcoming events like monday 25th dec - bank holiday and then on the homepage theirs a script that looks at that text file and shows on the website as a single line marquee?

Nope. reading text files/data off the server needs server side code.
