Thanks for the pointer. I installed the Web Developer toolbar. Can you point me to a tutorial that tells how to use it for debugging javascript? I also installed FireBug but I am having trouble using it.

At the very right hand end of the bar are two icons that will be red on CSS or javascript errors, clicking on them will bring up the error console that details what error where found.
I don't know of a specific tutorial on debugging javascript actually. There have been many (and sometimes still are) occasions when such a thing would have been remarkably useful
Firebug crashes my browser too often. I often have 5 or 6 browser instances open with several tabs in each so the memory leaks soon stack up.
