I have been looking at javascript codes (copy and paste) web sites. I am having no luck finding a code that would put a counter on a link. I am trying to make a counter next to file link so it shows on the web page "this file has been download x number of times".

Any ideas of what I need to be searching for or what that kind of javascript code would be called?

It cannot be done with javascript only, you will need some server side to collect and store the count in a database or flat file storage, and use "AJAX" calls to increment the count.
Reading and displaying the count can be done as the page is requested.

I have no idea what AJAX is and have very limited knowledge of databases. Thanks, I thought I was wasting time trying to find a way to do this and you saved me many long hours of researching the impossible.

it is far from impossible, but obviously will depend on your skill level and what (if any) server side code your site host has available.
Some time ago I posted code to do this somewhere and will either post it again or link to it when I find it

I use RackSpace so I have all kinds of hosting features, it a matter of my skill level which is not up to par. In this economy I had to let my freelancer IT people go so I have to do the work myself which is not something I have the skills to do. I know html well because there were no web design programs when I started my business and javacript I've used. I learned my article manager software, it's css sheet and can play with the codes enough to get what I want but after that... I pretty lose..

it is something I have to shove under the table till the economy gets better.

dstats.net go this site and try that javascript code , and if this doesn't work for you , try to put download file code in FORM tag and every form submit increase your counter with 1 value and redirect browser to the download code simultaneously , reply me after trying this,
