I'm just starting with javascript, I've got a pretty good grip on a few other languages, but wanted to get started learning JS also because it does seem to be far more complicated than say php.

I've gone through the w3schools tutorials which are good but basic. I've become slightly overwhelmed with the concept of toolkits. I'm not exactly sure what these are or which I should be interested in learning.

Where is a good place to start with Javascript? I guess I need a push in the right direction.

Thanks!

Tizag, Elated and DevGuru were my learning grounds.

Thanks, I'll check those out.

Are those "toolkits" and could you explain why there are different toolkits? I'm curious if they are similar to C++ Libraries... Or... add different functionality for more job specific applications?

On javascript libraries? Dunno to be honest, never used any of them. I'd rather write a couple of timer functions in preference to adding a lot of unused overhead just to get an element to "slide".

You can also check out the sticky, Fundamentals of Client-Side JavaScript. It has some good links to help you get started.

Before you start to use toolkits, you should at least become familiar with the basics. When I was starting out, I did everything by hand. Now I use jQuery in projects if a lot of effects are needed, to save time.
