In september i will be doing Java programming at college!

But what i want to know, is there more than one language in java? Like with VB, there is VB 6, VB Script and VB.Net. All these are different languages but inherit there old languages.

So is there different languages for java? For example, Java for web applications, Java for Mobile phones etc..

Or is java just 1 language and the syntax is all the same?

Any help on this would be great! As you can see, i have no knowlege of java!

Thanks!

Java is different from JavaScript; JavaScript runs in a web environment.

That's all I know :-)

angelus,

Java is only one language but publishes many different APIs. APIs are simply a standard way to access functionality. So for example, if you wanted to develop a Java application on a mobile phone, you would get the correct API and develop your application appropriately. There are numerous APIs for every imaginable functional area. J2EE is another term you will hear -- Java 2 Enterprise Edition. J2EE is a framework allowing for the development of large scale, complex server-based applications.

Java can be a great opening to a programming career -- good luck with your class.

The core language syntax and OO concepts are more or less fixed - all the extra functionality for different applications are part of the standard library of code that comes with a JAVA implementation, or any user libraries you get from other people. Certain bits of syntax have only been added to the language in recent versions but there is only one language.
