Hope you can help:-

One of our sites got trashed by Google because it managed to read the php files of some sponsored adverts to loans etc we were displaying on the board and we believe this is what killed the site in the rankings. To avoid this situation on other sites can anyone give any ideas how to stop googlebot following a link like this:-

When you look at the google site: command results it lists every file one after the other ie like this:-

document.write(" Free Student Loan Information in the UK Free UK
...Free Student Loan Information in the UK. Free UK student stuff, discounts and prizes plus free SMS, free six megabyte e-mail and free SMS. ...
www.sitename.co.uk/ miva/miva.php?keyword=student-loans -

When you click on the link it displays the adverts one after the other cashed and nothing else.

Any thoughts anyone - Help!!!

can you add an exception in your robots.txt?

What do i need to do to add this?

How effective is it?

And will googlebot either ignore it anyway OR penalise the site for blocking access to what it will know is a link to affliate advertising.

Sounds like you are trying to beat the system and nobody likes this.
If you want to rank well on google, play by the rules.

I wouldnt say beat the system,

We have worked on over 200 websites for clients over the last couple of years all have different requirements. I personally dont have any experience with Java hence the OP. Recently we have worked on a number of financial related type sites. Its a case of displaying content thats usefull to the end users and offering alternatives by way of PPC advertising which helps the webmaster concerned cover server costs etc.

A lot of search engines dont like affiliate links to finance/loan companies so we tend to advise against any of them however the site that lost position in google was due to the googlebot reading the php files for the javascript that my colleagues had set up in the normal way.

The site with the issue was a uk vehicle car loan site so it was related content however its evident search engines dont like these kinds of links anyway so i thought it worth asking the question if anyone had tried to set the script up in a different way or if the poster with the reply about using robot text had had success with it as we dont want to see a repeat on the next site we work on.

I dont think thats beating the system it could be the way the script was set up that the search engines dont like.
