Does anyone know how to create the effect that this guy does on his site

When you click on recent work image links there is an overlay expanding div effect, im not sure how he does it, looks like a lot of JS.

These are called, "lightboxes"
Do a Google search for ajax lightbox. There are a lot of different types, but most have the same look that the website above has.
