First off, Good thing you're a good webmaster and kept backups.
...
Especially considering that there was a threat to hack your site in the mix.
...
Not only that but your site did have some stuff tampered with recently. That's a great reason to take daily backups, but you do that anyway because you're a good webmaster.
...
Good news for you! It only takes a few minutes to upload your backup from the day before it was hacked. And it only takes a few more minutes tacked onto that to get rid of any moderators that 1. You can't trust. 2. Have easily guessed passwords. 3. Give out their passwords.
Oh, and if none of the above applies to you then I'd say you have bigger problems than just this incident. As far as going after the people responsible... Why? If you don't keep backups (Which I'm assuming you don't. Otherwise this wouldn't have been a big deal) then you obviously didn't care to much about the information, or losing it.
Pursuing someone for hackery is a pain in the ***.
Here's what you can do though. Gather up all the information you have. IP's of people who unlawfully gained access to your site and deleted the few posts. Get there usernames from the other forum. Get a link to the topic where it was discussed. And send it, and the backstory to the sites hosting company.
If your lucky they'll get a slap on the wrist for letting their members take advantage of someone who was open to attack. It sucks, but there isn't anything you can do about the bigger attack unless you have proof of the same parties involvement.
Good luck though.
