Hey,

I understand HTML and Javascript and all that goodness... been writing my own source for my websites for years, but took a long 2 year hiatus from websiting and now I'm trying to catch up. So, I'm using open source programs for the first time. I want to use ASP.NET (using Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition hopefully I'm creating this thread in the correct place) but I don't really understand how creating my website with this program will transfer over to my website. So basically what do I need to do to have what I've created in this program to take effect on my website. Is my ignorance too confusing? Thanks in advance

Visual Web Developer is free, but not open source.

It can be set up so you do your work against files on your own computer, and it can run your code for you to test. On the other hand, it can be set up to work directly on files on a web server, which is dangerous and not a good idea, but that would mean you don't need to transfer anything.

You should work on the files on your computer. Then you get a Windows Server web host, and FTP the files that make up your web application up to your server. Then you have a web site.

Oh okay I see. So the files that it creates automatically when I'm building a website with the web developer program I just need to FTP those and thats it really? Do you suggest a better program than the microsoft web developer?

That would be the best, unless you know .NET programming, and would like to build one yourself. Oh, that's right. Microsoft is trying to have designer tools seperate from developing code.

If your designing your website, you may use Microsoft Expression Web, or stick with Visual Web Developer. They both(?) have the development web server so you can test your web site live on your P.C.
