Hi, I'm quite new to the whole webmaster thing and looking to learn.
If someone sets up a website for me, what would I need to know in order to maintain it myself?

Thank you in advance,

Welcome to WT Kabir. Hopefully we can help you learn. As for what you need to know to maintain a site that really depends on how it's developed and what you want to do with it after it's been built.

For example you could install a WordPress blog in a few minutes and never really need to make any changes to it other than writing new posts. You wouldn't need to learn any code to do that since WordPress will take care of that part. The same would be true for most content management systems (CMS)

However I would suggest you start by learning HTML. A good place to begin is W3Scools

Thanks for the link and the warm welcome vangogh, I'm looking it over now.
The site I have to work on is a relatives business site, it's not a commerce site mind you, he provides seminars and training and i would be required to up date it according to various schedules he gives me, in addition to the normal maintenance.
If anyone has more advice it would be very welcome.

Kabir you might want to post the question in the web design forum since more people will be looking there to respond to it.

I think it will depend on how the site is developed as far as what you need to know. A content management system won't require you to know any code, though it's always good to know a little if you're working on a site.

There are free and pay calendar scripts where you'll be able to update events, etc that only require you to log in and update through the admin side of the script.

Learning HTML is still a good thing to know if you're maintaining a site and it's not difficult to learn. I've walked people with no background through updating sites I've developed for them. The hardest part is usually making the first couple of changes. Not because they're any more difficult, but because it's a little scary the first time or two. Once you get used to it it's fairly easy.
