Hello all. I'm GBG. I'm an attorney with some web/programming knowledge. I'm working on a project that would:
  1. use html forms and javascript to collect and validate client information;
  2. use php and mySQL to enter the information into a database, and;
  3. use PDFlib to generate appropriate legal documents on the fly.
I have posted a couple of questions and other members have been very helpful.

Is there any forum here for discussing legal/social aspects of web hosting such as Sec. 230 immunity and COPPA? I might be able give back some of what I have been generously given on the technical side.

That's a good question, dude. It's a very good question. But I honestly don't think you're going to find that forum.

Most people haven't even heard of COPPA, since most people (including myself) fall outside of its jurisdiction. It's one of the reasons we see as much crap that way as we do...it comes from parts of the world where children's rights aren't protected and where they're considered third-class citizens (behind women and men).

The problem with Section 230 is...quite frankly, it's hard to understand. I don't get whether or not the ultimate guilty party is the site owner or the site participant in an interactive site.

My suggestion to you, since you're the legal beagle, would be to build an "Internet Legal Forums" or something like that where things like this can be discussed. I don't think you'd have a high-traffic site, but you'd have a solid niche of regular readers/members.

Sorry to be the ugly American. Sometimes I forget how diverse the internet can be.

I'm more interested in contributing here right now, although my own Forum on cyber-law might be something for the future. I suppose I could post such things in the "General Discussion" area.

Thanks for the welcome.

Hi Jack, welcome to Webmaster-Talk. Enjoy the forums.

We might have a "legal" forum at some time, but you could answer questions in the General forum since that's where most of the legal questions have been asked.

Dave

Hi Jack and welcome to WT. I'm glad to see another lawyer join our community. The legal forum sounds like a great idea. Have fun and enjoy your stay!
