I wish I could step in like Shoemoney just did and say "oddcomments is in the house" and everyone one would know who I was, but the only notable thing I've ever done is my contribution to the 404 world (tinyurl.com/ycnbfm).
Seriously, though, I have been a reader of Shoemoney's blog for at least a year and I have mad respect for the guy ...and it's actually Shoemoney that inspired me to head down this entrepreneurial internet road. About a week ago I was have way through my morning SEO blog reading and came across a link to an article which then lead me to a picture of Shoemoney holding his fat check for $132,994.97. I've seen the check before but for some reason, this time I could not shake it from my head.
First it intrigued me, then it really annoyed me. I'm telling you, I couldn't stop thinking about. At lunch, coworkers were like, "Why are you so quite?" All I could say is, "I just realized that I have been doing this SEO thing backwards." And that's really what I was annoyed about ...I wasn't annoyed at Shoemoney for being smart enough to take advantage of the opportunities around him, but at myself for ignoring all these ideas and opportunities I've had over the years.
For 10+ years I've been deep into SEO. I've had my own web development business and I've managed the SEM/SEO programs for the biggest Fortune 500 company in Orlando, and now for the biggest Fortune 500 in another market (which I can't disclose at this point). I've helped everyone else make big bucks from the internet, and that's fine, but there comes a point where you stop making everyone else rich and do something for yourself and your family. And for me, that point is now.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not that greedy guy that is looking to hoard the wealth of the world for himself. I just want to be a good provider for my family, and have time to enjoy my kids while they are still living with me. There are also a few things that I believe I could do to make the world a better place, if I just had the time and money to put into it.
So... with that said, the biggest thing stopping me has been my programming abilities. I have the marketing and design skills; and some ideas which are not being done and, I believe, have huge potential. The development skills to bring them to fruition, however, are beyond me. So, instead of continuing to ignore these opportunities, I've decided to partner with two other individuals.
To make a short story long, these two guys are not only friends, but they are some of the most brilliant programmers/developers/UI designers and business people I've ever met. Currently we are deciding which project we are going to do first. We have about five or six on the table.
I will keep you posted.
