After 6 weeks of chopping and changing I actually went back to the first guide I bought and I’ve stuck with that since.

Excellent Advice! There are so many different things to learn, so many different ways to learn it, and so many places to go, that it's easy to start skipping around. Stick with one subject and one source. If it turns out your source sucks, then go to another, but don't start going to both.
So many people get overwhelmed when they start out. They've just started to pick up the basics of building a website, and then they're trying to learn CSS, JS, PHP, SQL, Flash, and a dozen other technologies all at once. At the same time they're trying to learn about SEO, Server Management, and a thousand other subjects.
It seems that you're off to a good start, and I'm glad to see a new intelligent member joining the forum. Have fun!
