Most of my game development experience has been in helping others with configuration issues, internet/network play issues, and some graphical/level content.
My hopes are, probably after several bad releases, to make "the next big hit" for online gaming -- a goal which I am sure is on the mind of any serious game developer.
Although I'm still interested in stand-alone's, 2-D, and definitely 3-D, I think that the industry is readying for an explosion. We truly have only touched the surface of computing -- as an industry, regardless of (it's) individual branches -- and the absolute best is yet to come.
Until I master the C++ language, I'm not sure where my game dev abilities will go, but the potential is really there, and the market is ready to experience tremendous growth.
