that sounds fair. Those with less than 10 posts should not get sigs.

They'll just spam till they hit the min post number then spam with their sig link.

Happens all the time. Adding a limit (especially a low one) will likely increase the junk posting instead of stopping it.

I wouldnt have a problem with sig links. Just dont click on them if you dont want to - exceptions being links that have no real benefit to the forum members because so many others are promoting the same thing. PIPS for example, which I am a part of, serves only to dilute the value when the sole purpose of many to come here is just to promote that. I would use my PIPS link in another forum where people dont know about it but I no longer want to use it in this one.

LOL!!! It's a tie!!

Being a webmaster site, I'm guessing most of us know how to cloak the URLs so they don't look like refer links!!! You got .htaccess and meta redirect, then php and perl that can redirect...if the affiliate programs allow it.

So enforcing it might not be very easy...unless some one goes through clicking every ones signature links or makes a program to do just that!!!

It seems very impractical to me to be worrying about what type of sig files are being posted. You don't have to click on them. Policing sig files would be a drag.

One of the major benefits of forums is the sig file. Everyone is just trying to learn and earn the best they can so let them. Everyone goes through a learning curve. Let them learn for themselves what works for them and what does not. I don’t think real spammers make it very far in e-business these days. Though, I’ve been known to be wrong.

I don’t see an issue here as long as members contribute and make an effort to learn and follow the forum rules.

As strange as it sounds, some people don’t even know they are doing something wrong as they really don’t know what spamming is and why it sucks. They have to learn this and I don’t think someone should be banned when they make such mistakes. The moderators do a good job with warnings and all that so I think this forum has a pretty good system in place. While perfection is unattainable, this forum does a good job being one of the best.

However, I like the idea of requiring X number of posts before you have the ability to post a sig. I think 25 would be a good number. This would go a long way to help the moderators to keep this a quality forum. It would help with the learning curve and help to weed out the intentional spammers.

As an idea… maybe Lee can set up a script that would require sig categorization. This would help with those of you who despise certain sig types and minimize ‘wasted’ surfing time.

I can see why this was done, but here is what I think.
  • We should be able to post affiliate links in topics and replies if we label them as referral links, and offer a non-ref link as well.
  • As long as signatures aren't overflowing with ref links and are not screaming out "CLICK ME NOW" (or similar), they should not be very problematic.
  • Does the person lose anything by clicking on a ref link? It's not like because he clicked that link, his income will be cut in half for that product.
  • If someone shows me a cool affiliate program or new forum or something, I use their ref link because without them I wouldn't have found the place most likely. In a sense it is a form of internet "thank you".
People seem to treat ref links as something dangerous and suspicious. They are hesitant to click on it for some reason because they don't want to be "bound" to someone or even help them out. It's like it's a huge dog-eat-dog competition (I guess in a sense it is) where it is a taboo to help others out.

Why don't we step past that and acknowledge that it is sometimes beneficial to post affiliate links (in moderation)? Could we maybe make the rule a bit less severe than it is now?
