Today I deleted about 800 previously registered members who never replied to the registration confirmation email!

This should also clear up several unused member names.

We've already had one lucky winner! You know, a new member signed up with a name that was previously taken by an unconfirmed.

Keep up the good work, Chief.....errr.....ummm....Tim!

3300 members...names must be getting short.

Would it be possible to run a delete of all members who havn't posted for over a certain amount of time? Could you set an auto-delete so that if someone doesn't post for say 18months, their account is automatically deleted?

This would free up names. You could also have an email automatically go out after they havn't posted for a year reminding them about the forum.

Just a few suggestions...

Sounds like a great idea to clean out the place a little. Opens up possibly a few names for those who want them.

If you clear the database up, would it speed up the forums a bit?

I'm not sure that would be a good idea. It would cause a lot of conflict. It would be fine if we deleted usernames that have never posted, but to delete someone with 5 posts, for example, would be difficult. For one, it would cause problems with the post count. If someone was looking up an older post, what post count would you display next to a post by old user xyz, after he has been replaced by new xyz? And what happens when you look in xyz's profile? I think these are issues that vB isn't ready to handle.

I agree with conker here. I think that once a user has posted once, that's it -- they are in forever. Praveen made a good point on this topic a few weeks ago in thread

http://www.webmaster-talk.com/showthread.php?t=10677

and I don't think he would mind if I quoted that distinguished figure here:

I think all users who haven't logged in/posted something in let's say 3-4 months should be deleted.. just a thought!

It can be deffinatley done, but like the mods said, it may cause conflict. It would, however make the form a bit faster, but it will soon slow down again when more members join. I thought about that idea on our up-coming site with a forum, but i reviewed the problems it causes. You want to keep WT as good as possible, yes it may be getting a bit slow, but that is the server's problem, not WT's.
