Some of you are probably in the same boat as me and don't have the major capital to invest in regular marketing. Or, also like me, don't see a clear ROI on standard marketing. Are any of you doing "Gorilla" style marketing? Anyone want to share ideas?

Print T-shirts with your company logo and url on them. Sponsor a wet t-shirt contest. Post the videos on sites like youtube and metacafe.

Hi,

Politely, I know a lot about "Gorilla" marketing. It is what my biological farther dose for a living. His firm has been hired to promote everything from political campaigns to celebrities.

I mean No harm by saying this but if you don't have major money to invest in any campaigns don't start you are throwing your money out the window.

There is one way to get things done for little or NO cost but for that you need a team of people all working for the same goal.

What are you trying to promote? A website?

I would start buy building a team of friends a family members first. Then your next step would be all of your network companies that you deal with.

The next step to your "Gorilla" marketing is your propaganda.

Are you the expert in your field? If not why aren't you?

If your wanting to take on this battle who will be the best spokes person for your propaganda? You or someone else on your team with a passion for what end result are wanting?

I could go on forever on this subject.

But first build your team to get your duck in a row.

Hi,

And who are your marketing for and what image are going after with that?

I did not say it was a bad idea.

The question was without major capital.

Let take this apart.

City Entertainment license to have a wet t-shirt contest.

Place to have your wet t-shirt contest.

Advertisement to promote the contest.

Contest winning money.

Cost to print the t-shirt.

Cost to to make and edit the video.

Cost to pay every woman in the contest so you can use their image in your promotion unless you are wanting to get sued. (That to is a form of "Gorilla" marketing for if you know how to promote your lawsuit it will pay you more then the suit. Think of the Mcdonald's coffee lawsuit. They got more in Free advertising over that then what they paid the person who won. Mcdonald's came out the winner.)

Another thing that needs a team of people to make it happen.

You need a team first. Even if they are all your friend and you own a night club to have the event.

I'm guessing you actually want Guerilla marketing ideas, but in case you don't. Try shaving the logo of your website into your gorilla's back so that when you take it for a walk around town, or the village, people who are amazed at seeing a man walking around with a gorilla may also notice the branding.

Other ideas could include making your gorilla very large, the size of king kong, getting it to ascend a building (on the outside) beat its tummy and loudly repeat the name of your brand over and over (this will take voice training of course).

Finally, buy your gorilla a suit, get MS word out and do up a good cv, get it to shave, put on some fresh aftershave, send it down to the employment agency and see if you can get it to do a basic job in the advertising industry, from where it can hopefully rise, slowly but surely, as any beefy gorilla type would, to the top, from where it can give you the best possible branding in the world.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Sorry for misspelling guerilla.

I'm already doing the t-shirt thing. I have the company logo and URL printed on it and wear it when we do events or just around town like to the mall or something.

The wet t-shirt contest is good but then it gets to a point where I can't use it on my site since I have to keep the content safe for work because of the advertisers. We have done some bikini contests and such, one of our favorites was a bikini bull riding contest. I found a local club that was holding the contest. I asked if I could shoot photos and use them in exchange for publicity and advertising. Most clubs jump on that stuff since it doesn't cost them anything. As for the girls, tell them you'll send them a copy of the images in exchange for a signature on a model release form. Overall a great article that gave a lot of traffic to the site and a night of advertising and it only cost the price of the bar tab for my staff.

One other thing I've been doing, I got some business cards printed up with just the URL and logo. When I'm out somewhere like a bar or something, go to the bathroom and leave a couple on the mirror, or drop them on a table or something. It sparks interest and gets people to hit the site.

My next is going to be stickers. There's a party district in my area and there's bumper stickers and stuff all over the place. I'm thinking of printing some up and adding to the graffiti.

Hi,

Politely, people t-shirt, business cards, bumper stickers, advertisements on buses and the few other ideas I have read here and on the links are true Not Guerilla marketing.

They are all unique advertising ideas but that is all.

If all your are looking for is unique advertising ideas then here is a few to try.

Have your URL done in sky writing at half time over the college football game, or local Thanksgiving parade.

You know the white lines in the parking lot. The ones you should park your cars between. Make a deal with the owner of strip malls to repaint the white lines on his lot in exchange you also get to stencil your url in black on top of the white lines. Right where peoples car doors open. (most people look down as they step out of the car)

Print your URL on pens, then when you write a check leave the pen for the next person to see or take. Also Print your URL on the check.

This one is more sneaky and shady. Get a self inking rubber stamp made with your URL. Make friends with the guy in the truck on the morning paper route offer to ride along with your new friend and help him deliver the papers, then stamp your URL on the top right side ft page of the paper.

If you or your friends lives near a major road take rope lights and spell out your URL on the side of the house or building facing the road. Use black tape to cover the parts of the rope for spaces.

If you see a old barn on the side of the road that needs painting make a deal with the farmer to paint the old barn in exchange for the side facing the road you also get to pain your URL. Best for high traveled roads like interstates.

Last but not least if you have a celebrity friend that is going to drive his Bronco on a car chase with the police that will be on national news, make him a deal that you will send him a cake with a file in it to have your URL printed on the door first.

Thanks Sami Some of those may still be a little too pricey for some people.I have a different take on the rubber stamp idea though. Use a rubber stamp and stamp the URL on cash then put them into circulation. It has a better chance of being seen by more people.

Apart from some being vandalism and others being unlikely if you are not American.

There are people living on the other side of that water on the left and right of the US

Hi,

You are so right

Targeting the correct demographics of any product or in this case a website is very important.

One of the hardest markets to conquer is the teens.

Before a persons spends $1 on advertising, tons of time should be spent on studying the demographics of the people you wish to target.

Extreme example: If your site sold shoes for men, buying advertisement in a ladies magazine would not be the best choice. Yes, some men might see it but not really the best bang for your buck.

This is why most product marketing is geared toward women. The two biggest demographics to focus on are always women and children. Women stereotypically run the finances of the household and kids will biatch until you buy them something. Unfortunately neither one of them fit my 18-35 year old male demographic so I'm out of luck.

Using such things as street giveaways were found to be an excellent way to attract more consumers. This is also know as doing market research just in a slightly different way.

All this talk about t-shirts and bumper stickers, etc.

Let me ask you something...when's the last time you not only remembered, but excitedly visited a website after seeing the domain name on a bumper sticker?

It's shotgun marketing at best.

FWIW (yeah, I know I'm new to these forums, but certainly not new to this game) the absolute best "free" guerrilla marketing is accomplished by letting the conventional press do all the heavy lifting for you.

In order to do this, you'll have to have something actually newsworthy to talk about so that's the first part of your brainstorming efforts. The next part is to make sure that it will have national (or even international) appeal. What good is a big story if it's limited to the folks in your tri-county area? Make it BIG.

Then craft a professional press release. No, not one of those spammy, free, link-filled crap press releases - a real, concise, newsworthy release. Keep your eye on legitimate news sources to get an idea of what a Fortune 500 company's release looks like. Also seek out and find some releases that large web-based companies put out when they were on the cusp of breaking big. Those are typically really good examples of how you should be practicing your releases because that's when a startup's marketing department is really firing on all cylinders - after they've been going long enough to have promoting their product down to a science but before they got so big it turned into a bureaucratic mess.

Then start doing your research on editors/journalists/reporters for magazines, columnists, nat'l newspapers, trade journals, relevant talk and radio shows, etc. to grab up contact information. By contact information, I mean an actual individual's email address, not some Info@RadioStation email address that probably gets checked by a bored intern, if at all.

Then email them a personalized email with your press release attached. Keep it short, concise, and professional. Think of it like a resume/cover letter - the email is your cover letter and the press release is your resume. Your ultimate goal is the "job interview" which in this case, is the phone call from this harried journalist to find out more. That's where you land them and reel them in.

Go big or go home with this. I have to say, stop daydreaming about people going gaga over seeing your domain on t-shirts all over town. People get a free t-shirt, they take it home and throw it in a drawer until they need it to wear while mowing the lawn. Get the power of the mass media behind you by taking advantage of their resources - by leveraging their networks.

Hope this helps. I promise it works if you've got the gumption to use some persistence.
