Hi All.
Im really stuck. Not sure if this is the right place to ask but praying someone can help me.
I need to install Drupal on my machine. Well I actually want it installed on my memory stick. I have downloaded xammp and managed to get xammp and Drupal loaded up.
OK so this is where it goes wrong. Im a dummy, those dummy books were written for me. I go into http://localhost/drupal-51/ I can open up Drupal and enter my database name and the things it asks. It then says

Failure to connect to your MySQL database server. MySQL reports the following message: Access denied for user 'jamesbelcher'@'localhost' (using password: YES).
Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct database hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?

So I think to myself you really are dumb you need to set up a database. So I go to xammp no I dont. I go to this http://localhost/phpmyadmin/ actually I can get to that through xammp so I was right. I then set up a database but I dont know if Im doing it write. Can someone help me in English dumb *** talk what to do please?
Thanks
James

I never could get xampp working. I got WampServer working to test Drupal, but the default configuration settings were a lot different than what most LAMP servers seem to use.

I would try setting up a Linux installation on another machine or install VMWare on your Windows system. It takes about 4 lines of commands to get A, M & P running in Ubuntu.

Thanks for the reply. I have now downloaded WAMP. I didnt want to do this as I like to stick to one program instead of having lots of different ones hanging around. I only end up forgetting how to use one if I dont use it for more than a month or so.

Any way went onto this site http://www.howtoinstalldrupal5.co.uk/
I wonder if he makes a lot from the ads? Thats another thread I guess so back to this one.

I get to step 6 fine. Then it asks to set up a user but does not really give much detail how to do this.

Do you have any ideas? Its taken a week to get this far lol.

Thanks

The only way I have found to set up a DB is using phpmyadmin. When I did it I just used the username root and the password I had asigned to root. Using the Drupal installer I would guess that you just leave the password field blank if you have not assigned one.

I feel pretty sure there is a way to add a a user and password through phpmyadmin. I will look at mine at let you know if you still need help.
