I'd imagine it would be quite difficult to get people to visit a site with no purpose. You need to give people a reason to visit your site, a page full of ads is not a good reason.

Remember, word of mouth is the best form of advertising. I visited your site, and left immediatly. I would not tell others about it. Try having more then just adverts on the site and maybe others would be more inclined to visit and possibly get others to visit.

Your website is very sloooow loading. How in the world did you get all those hits for a site that offers nothing to the visitor?

Not only do you need to get people to go to your site, but you need to give them a reason to come back.

Also you need to speed up the loading of your page.

This is going to be a hard bet! how long have you got? I think you might need to start promoting the site to people/magazines/others sites - get people to link to you if you place a link to them.

Here's a good tip - give out something that is free, it will always get people to your site, better still give out loads of free things - how about e-cards, easy to setup- they send them from your site and for people to look at them they will have to come back to your site, 2 visits for the price of one!!

Would about a 'get your friends to come to the site' link - get people to reccommend the site to friends - perhaps even you could say the person who gets the most people to go to your site will get a bit of your winnings...if you win!

But giving away free things is the way forward!

Hope that helps!

If you're interested in owning a good, quality website from which you'll profit, I'd suggest you follow the great advice above. Before investing in advertising, make sure your site has content worth seeing.

Why not manipulate the subject of the site a bit? One billion views... you could turn it into a political or opinion based forum - nothing in the bet said you couldn't do that!

Or, if you just want to win the bet, type "expired domain traffic" into Google and spend a few hundred dollars on bog standard hits ;-)

But hey, don't go for the latter!

That reminds me of my first website. No point to it, just a banner farm with the sole purpose of making me money. I had to change my business model because the ad farm idea is really not so great.

If you want to get some more visitors you should put up some more drinking stories.

I saw a similar page listed on another forum where the owner is selling pixels for $1 each and he has sold almost $200,000 worth of advertising space. His website is crammed full of little ads that can barely be differentiated one from the other. He has also managed to be listed with DMOZ. I cannot understand this as they are so critical of REAL websites with content and value. Owner says he is trying to collect money for school.

I agree with everyone that it will be hard to attract visitors to a site that has as it's only purpose getting people to vies the site.

You might do best by attracting people to your blog since that does offer a way to povide content that people might be interested in. If you can hold their attention with your writing people might come back as well. I would get the word out there about your blog and have links in the blog back to the home page (assuming you need people to vies the home page to win your bet).

I agree with nac above - for any site, don't forget the value of conventional (non-online) publicity. How about doing a really extreme stunt to attract TV coverage and somehow work the website into it??

In the UK somebody got a high hit rate for a new site by cutting a stencil with the web address on it and spray-painting it (with *REMOVABLE* paint) all over the pavements in the City of London - not that I would recommend anything so anti-social myself!

And I got a lot of hits very quickly (10,000 visits - not hits - per day) for a 9/11-related website by getting the story covered (free) by a PR agency worldwide.

(Plus of course you can always increase the number of files on your pages by splitting up graphics etc if the bet is just about hits, not page views. But this is somewhat unethical really. Plus if you have a slow server you might end up getting your visitors thoroughly ticked off.)

WHO removed the "removable" paint? Here in the US, this person would have a big problem. Someone would have to pay to have it removed and the web owner would probably receive a hefty fine.

It seems if you have an unusual idea, are lucky and market it right, the media likes to report on it. Then others jump on the bandwagon.

Just some thoughts...It loaded ver slow and I think there was too much to read at the top. Maybe shorten the story so people won't have to read as much when they initially come to the site.
