How to get a quote without commitment?

Hi all

There is a javascript web programming project which I am thinking of commissioning. However this will depend on how much the project will cost.

In order to get an idea of how much the project will cost I need to post on freelancer. I see two problems with this:

- Firstly I am asking vendors to quote on a project which may never happen; and
- Even if it does go ahead it is likely to only go ahead about 1-2 months after we have an idea of costs.

Is it okay to post in this way? Should I only be posting for jobs which are ready to go ahead? If so, how can I possibly evaluate the cost/benefit of a project without getting an idea of how much it will cost first?

I would be very interested to hear your thoughts.

Thanks

Vic

Asking for a price quote is pretty common business practice.....

Can not believe that anyone would require a "prospect" to accept a bid....

I am going toput my two cents in, not sure if they are helpful or not.

I would suggest starting the project with the least cost you can spare at the current time and try to commission the project in four to eight phases each phase having 1-2 weeks time limit and a specific budget. That way you can find out the cost of the project within the first month.

In my view this will save Time and also provide you with the necessary data needed to find out the overall cost of the project. I hope this post of mine was helpful.
