You might want to go with PHP 5 since support for PHP 4 is going to end relatively soon.

There are many resources online on installing LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) that would be better said than I could do in a post. Just do a search for lamp setup or something similar and you should find some setup guides.

yes i havent experience with installing these on linux, but the LAMP set up is definatly the best to use, and definatly go for PHP 5, and if you want php you can have both installed and have like php4 parse .php4 so u can use both if u use incompatible softwares and stuf like that.

you can probally pick up bundle ones which install all the softwares in one go preconfigured. to all work im using XAMPP on my local windows which does this, im sure theres a linux version somewhere google it

I am using XAMP for windows, its like i said basically one installer which installs PHP MySQL and Apache, PHPmyAdmin and has a web interface which helps a bit

they are not designed to be secure if anything quite the opposite its perfectly fine for testing, but it shouldnt be used for a commerical webserver or one which is on the web 24/7 without tunnign it up

my mate proved this i (stupidly) have my ports forwarded, and had a script on it where u can enter something and save it as a file.

he saved a bash script and had administrive access to my DOS... and he thought (or so he says) that it didnt have th permission so he shutdown my PC.. and probably laughed while i said to him brb my PC is just randomly shutting down ! Lol
