i think doing this in the way you describe would most definatly not be the best. depending on your account doing this may completely use your bandwidth.
its probably possible to make a PHP script which could connect and send all the files over but this would be quite a intensive script, and would be very server intensive too, as well as using a ton of bandwidth.
Best way would be to (if you server supports it) compress the files into a compressed archiveand then transfering it yourself. and then decompressing it on your server.
