My advice is to take it slow and get it right the first time. Its easier to integrate features from the start than it is to patch them in later. Also my approach is to get the layouts for all of my pages (actually my partner does the layout I'm just the code monkey) and then attack the problem just as a user would experience your site. By this I mean start where you users will start. Build your registration page first (this will help you decide what information you need to store about your users in the database) then build your login page (implement security features from the start! its especially hard to implement this later once you have users who depend on your current system). Then your home page and other features.

Also comment your code and attack one problem at a time, if you jump around you're going to end up with code that doesn't work with the rest of you system. Thats my advice hope it helps.
