has anyone done anything like this or can point me in the right direction in terms of any articles, lessons, tutorials on doing something similar to this?

A site of that magnitude will require significant development time and skills. You can however start with a Content Manager like Xoops - http://xoops.org or Joomla - http://joomla.org Both are fairly user-friendly and have modules created for just what you may need.

i'm developing a website like that. the first thing you need is a site design thats been made into CSS because i find it hard trying to look at html when theres tables everywhere. Try to create each individual script before putting them in your html page. i find it easier that way than trying to debug 50 scripts in one page. once you've made the individual scripts try and incorporate them into one page.
