okay, i saw http://dead-links.com/ and i love it great tool.

And i REALLY want to get hold of the script because i want to add to it, i want to have that script or a php equiv which not only checks if link is active but also checks its validation status.

So when it checks if active, it also submits a request to the W3C validator, and then shows Valid XHTML 1.0 Strict or which ever doc type it is or Not Valid Xhtml 1.0 strict and also links to the w3 page which would be easy i would think?

But how on earth would i
a) find / write a bot
b) submit requests in this way to the w3c

Answers on a post below

Thanks

TP for GOOD and HELPFUL answers.

For the 'find a bot' part, the W3C actually offers a link checker that you can download and play with. It's written in Perl though, but I'm sure it's a good start if you need some ideas to do it in PHP.

As for validating the pages, the W3C offers an experimental API for use with their validator. However, it does mention (and rightfully so) that excessive usage will cause your site to be banned, so if you plan on making this a public service, you should host a copy of the validator on your own server. You can download the validator from here.

Thank you for the help but after looking its too annouying to install the service on my own hosting which i would have liked, from what i read it needs all the modules and i cant be botherd with fraffing with that.

Does anyone know of a PHP alternative to the w3c validator?.

Sorry im clueless with perl, it would have to be PHP i just dont have the time at moment to be trying to figure it out, if the link checer was in php im sure i could have played with it easily to do what i wanted

thanks
