I am using a style that is not valid and I would like to know what file/files I need to try and edit to make it valid.

Thanks so much for the help.

Hard to know without having access to your files, but since you attempted to validate index.php start there and once you've cleaned that up you'll want to work your way into the other files that index.php includes.

Chances are it's going to be every file of phpBB that produces html.

You don't need a XHTML doctype for a phpBB forum, it doesn't use XML anywhere.

Use a HTML4.01 Strict doctype

It might not be as hard as you think. Many of the errors will probably be the same. A lot of times fixing one cleans up a few dozen. Fixing one can also add new ones because the validator is reading the code differently.

Until you get down to the last few don't always trust the number of errors it's showing. One error could be showing up as many more.
