Hey Eric,

The easiest way is to just drop the favicon.ico into the root folder of your site. All but
the oldest browsers will automatically detect it. It must be named favicon.ico to work.

The other way is to find where your <head> tag is and insert the following code into it...

HTML Code:
<link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico"  type="image/x-icon">
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">
Using both codes ensures that it works in most browsers.

You need to use an image editor that will legitimately create an icon file.

I don't use them all the time but it's a very handy way to make you're hyperlink stand out on a person's browser favourites.

Just in case you didnt realise from the the perfect answer given by Moxxnixx there is no differance, PHP is only a server side processer which gives its out put out as html/xhtml
