I have an idea of putting to gether an open source cms one that can be installed very fast and that can be turned into a forum, blog, classified ads site, auction site with one click from an admin control panel. It would support addons being open source people could add to the cms and share them. It would also have a search engine where every one of the cms's could be indexed this would only be for this cms to increase site activaty for every person using the cms. anyone want to help? I was thinking of three sites one for the cms download one for the addons and a search engine site. insane idea?

To be honest, it really sounds like most CMS' to a degree... it's just that yours probably has all of the components already installed but just disabled.

What, really, do you see in your vision that makes this CMS unique, exactly?

If you mean using existing software, it wouldn't be bad. If you were planning on creating the blog, forum, etc from scratch, that would be a huge task, and it would take a very long time to come up with something that is of comparable quality. Instead, you could just take Wordpress/phpBB/phpauctions (all are GPL), and integrate them.

It sounds like a nice idea, but it would be a momentous task and one that once launched, you'd have to keep regularly updated. Wordpress for example is now so large that people keep finding security holes and they have to fix them regularly. Just think how much harder it would be when you had any number of components to fix - blogs, forums, auction sites and everything else. They'd have the exact same code as you so if there was a weakness, they'd find it - no searching around for security vulnerabilities.

I'd also like to say that I really hate it when people keep using the phrase "I have a dream" (in this case a vision) - it's like you can't think of anything more original so use an already overused phrase

It would be great if you could do it. The problem is, however, that if you attempt to do all of that chances are you will do an OK job at implementing a forum, blog, auction or whatever, but I don't think it would be as good as the CMSs that focus on just one thing.

You would need a huge team to accomplish this most likely. Attempting to go it alone or with just a buddy and most likely by the time you get anything ready for release you'll have to recode it in PHP6 or bring it up to standards in some other way.

Not to shatter your dreams... but I don't think its a viable option unless you have a ton of resources.

Maybe focus your skills on something original... forums blogs and auctions have been done and over done... what is something useful that no one or very few people have?

I have to say, it really sounds like you need drupal. http://www.drupal.org

I'm pretty sure that it offers everything you're looking for.
