The best place for PHP is the documentation http://www.php.net/docs.php
and the mysql http://dev.mysql.com

In my experience there is not one good book to learn from. It takes several.

Ones that I like are
Oreilly - Learning PHP and MySQL
Oreilly - Learning PHP5
Prentice Hall - Practical PHP and MySQL

Oreilly's PHP Hacks and PHP Cookbook are good also

hey, see now, i didnt know they did PHP, i guess they have to really but i never thought about it. cheers... they helped me loads with html and css, maybe they can with PHP aswell, thanks.

although i find the internet much more useful than books for learning programming languages, ive always found that a book can help me a lot alongside the internet especially too explain things i dont understand etc...

A search on this form yielded several threads regarding this already:
http://www.webmaster-talk.com/php-fo...ege-learn.html
http://www.webmaster-talk.com/php-fo...php-books.html
http://www.webmaster-talk.com/php-fo...php-books.html
http://www.webmaster-talk.com/php-fo...books-get.html

Though to avoid negative feedback, a book I recommend is:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/MySQL-Dynami...9078696&sr=8-3
I learned most of what I needed to know from it, then I went to http://www.php.net for the rest.
