I need help trying to figure out how to show a limited amount of characters from a variable..

Eg.

if $show = 'sdajdhksjahd jsahd jashd jasdh jkasasdasdgui' instead of
showing the whole thing you limit it to showing only the first 15
characters like: 'sdajdhksjahd js'
