I hope you understand this is no small task. It will involve learning much more than designing a website or html.

You can also try:
http://www.freewebmasterhelp.com/tutorials/phpmysql/

It takes you though the building of a contacts database, which could easily be adapted for what you need with the knowledge you learn in the tutorial.

You'll need a beginner's background in PHP and MySQL. This won't take long, if you have had some experience programming and learn only what you need to learn for this project. If you've done some programming before, and know what if-then-else and while are, then you should be fine. If you do not have any programming experience, I would learn the basic commands, conditional statements, loops and arrays (optional, but it might help with understanding MySQL), and basic database connectivity.

Good luck in this endeavor!

This is not a perfect solution by any means but it could be a decent implementation for a homeowners website.

You can download a free password protection javascript that does not contain the password in the source code at http://www.dynamicdrive.com. You might use it to password the first page following your home page then your users would be able to access pages 2 - n and it would keep others out. What it WILL NOT do is prevent anyone from bookmarking pages 2 - n and accessing them directly.

If you're in a hurry there are also some decent password protection software companies that will sell you either PHP or ASP that includes a database for approximately $100 - search on password protection if you're interested in a 'turnkey' solution.

Good Luck
JJ

A password protection script in PHP is one of the easiest you can ever do. If you're still daunted, just use one from hotscripts, they've got a bunch of good ones, as I recall. PHP user auth section of hotscripts
